IPPNW

IPPNW is the only international medical organization dedicated to preventing nuclear war and abolishing nuclear weapons. We recognize that the catastrophic health and environmental consequences of a nuclear war are at the extreme end of a continuum of armed violence that undermines health and security. IPPNW is committed to ending war and advancing understanding of the causes of armed conflict from a public health perspective.

Around the world, there are many medical students active in this organization as well: most of them are working on projects, like Target X, Pen Pals for Peace and Recap.

The main goal of Target X is to create awareness among people about the dangers of nuclear weapons and the existence of nuclear weapons in their own country. A group of medical students, wearing a white coat, to catch the attention of people on the street, are standing around a red cross, which symbolizes the place where a nuke could be dropped. The medical students talk with the people on the street about the possible consequences of such a nuclear attack. On the website of the IPPNW-students are reports and photo´s of all Target-X installations in the world. If you`re interested in doing this project yourself, it´s a good idea to come to the conference to learn from the experiences of other European students who already did this project.
The goal of Pen Pals for Peace is to establish a common ground between Israeli and Palestine young people, so that they can meet and discover each others culture, with their differences and similarities. The project matches pen pals from all over the world with Palestine and Israeli students. In the letters they write the participants can discuss the problems of the Isreal-Palestine conflict. The project gives the Palestine and Israeli students the chance to see the conflict from a neutral point of view; the other participants can show their empathy for the problem and they can see the problems from another view than just the view the media is spreading. If you´d like to join this project, you can also visit the IPPNW-students website.

Recap is short for ‘The Refugee Camp Project´ and in this project, medical students get the chance to have a one-month experience in a Palestine Refugee Camp. The project’s aim is to draw a greater awareness to the actual situation in the refugee camps, to provide medical and social help to the refugees and to work towards non-violent conflict prevention.
